First Impressions- For all they’re worth…

I was recently asked if it was true that it takes women a split second to make up her mind whether or not she’ll give a guy a chance. Well, while this isn’t always the case, making a strong first impression is absolutely invaluable.

Everyone’s time is precious. When a woman is approached by a stranger she isn’t going to waste this time even entering into a dialogue with you if you don’t make a strong approach. The myth is that this first impression is based solely on looks. That is completely wrong- whilst being good looking might give you a slight natural advantage the other aspects of your approach will carry far more weight when she makes her decision whether or not she’ll give you that chance. Here are four of the most important factors to a good approach:

1) SMILE! Few things are more infectious than a smile and this automatically conveys that you’re excited to talk to her. I’m not talking about a big, toothy grin here but a genuine smile. They put people at their ease and make them relax. Also, a genuine smile brightens up anyone’s face, so you’re automatically making yourself more attractive!

2) BE UNAPOLOGETIC! Don’t, whatever you do, say sorry as part of your opener. Why should you be sorry that you’ve approached her? You just wanted to let her know she looks great, and that’s something any of us are happy to hear, even if we don’t show it. Have a strong, confident stance and don’t inflect your voice upwards at the end of your sentences. You’ll automatically come across as more confident which is one of the most attractive things about anyone.

3) GIVE HER SPACE! Invading her personal space straight away is just going to make her feel uncomfortable and will result in her trying to get away from you as quickly as she can. If, when you have stopped her, you feel you are too close, take a step back before continuing. In the same way, making your opener overtly sexual, particularly during day game, will probably have a similar effect- some experienced PUA’s find it works for them but generally to us girls it just comes across as sleazy.

4) DON’T BE OUTCOME DEPENDENT! The easiest way to forget all of the above and turn yourself back into a bag of nerves is to be focusing on that number close from the moment you open the set. How do you know at this point that you want her number? For all you know she could be an absolute nutter. Your first motive is to deliver your opener, hopefully make her smile and find out a bit about her to decide whether or not she’s worth spending your time on.
